<lj:music>Anthony Hamilton - Comin' From Where I'm From</lj:music>

If you haven't heard the song "Comin' From Where I'm From" by Anthony Hamilton, from the album of the same name, I very strongly recommend that you cruise over to iTunes and listen to the preview.

It's a very chill song. Kind of a modern day, evolutionary descendant of the blues, with modern R&B instrumentation and smooth vocal harmonies. Great song for a rainy day, or to cheer you up and help you relax when you're pissed off, or down.

$0.99 is a small price to pay for this kind of aural bliss. =0

Clicky clicky: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=2415870

Oh, well. Considering how all of my non Sox fan friends (yes, I do have them) were gloating and talking about how badly beaten the Sox were getting, I suppose I should be happy that they made the incredible comeback that they did. Those Sox - I swear, they're drama whores and doing it on purpose. =0

A massive rally in the last three games. But tragically, it was too little, too late. At least the series ran a full seven games and the last game was a nail biter. No one can say Boston aren't still worthy of their revered status. I look forward to Lowell coming back next season, and maybe a further refinement of the batting lineup and bullpen*. Everything else is pretty solid, as we proved.

* Speaking of the bullpen, it's already great; Okajima ("Hideki!"), Masterson, and Papelbon performed masterfully. If we get a couple more relievers like them, and our starters can stay on top of their game, we should be nearly impossible to score on most of the time.

Let's hope the Sox can take back their rightful place at the top next year. Until then, I intend to root for the Rays, who have us a hell of a fight! I don't have to like them, but I respect them. =)

-A

It turns out he allowed five runs, but he DID make some great plays on the field, including catching a line drive that came right at his head (I would have turned away like George Michael in Arrested Development, LOL) and running to 1st for a tag.

Despite trailing 0-7 in the bottom of the seventh, the Sox launched an epic comeback that made me proud.

Even if they end up losing the series, I'll be happy that they rallied. This win was enough to appease me.

That being said, of course I'd love to see the Sox win the World Series again this year! ^_^

Hello, Internet.

It's me, Aaron.

Long time, no post. I know. I know.

I miss my girlfriend. Well, I guess she is my ex-girlfriend now.

There, I said it. I miss her. I wish I had never broken up with her. I just couldn't take it, she had trust issues. She thought I was cheating on her. Ugh. I have not had any kind of relationship since the breakup, and I guess I'm just kind of in Limbo emotionally.

I thought the time away would give me room for self improvement, whatever that means. And I suppose it has, but I get lonely often (I know, I know; whinge, whinge, whinge...) and I miss our amazing conversations. It was nice just to have someone I could talk to about ANYTHING with, you know?

Like, I can talk to some of my friends about some things, like games or movies or comics or music, and I can talk to some of my friends about religion, politics, philosophy, psychology, etc, and I can talk to some of my friends about fetish and kinky stuff, and whatever. But how many people can I talk about all of that stuff with, without them being either weirded out or bored or whatever by one or another subject? Not many. And most of the ones I could, I've lost touch with because I'm an introverted, self-loathing freak who thinks no one really wants to talk to me, hence I don't call them.

Whee. Self-hating for the WIN.

Alright, I'm being dramatic, I don't feel that bad, really. But you know how sometimes you just get on one of those kicks. I feel a lot better now, actually. W00t.

Thanks for listening, Internet. Feel free to poke fun at me now.

    <lj:music>Underworld - Cowgirl</lj:music>

So, I was speaking with my wonderful girlfriend about films, and when she asked me what I thought the "greatest movie ever made" was, I responded "12 Monkeys... no - Brazil".

Now, aside from both being by Terry Gilliam, they have something in common - they are both dystopian flicks and both have rather sad, tragic endings.

Although I know she appreciates Brazil, I could also tell that she was wondering something. She never came out and asked me, but I could feel the question in her mind, anyhow:

"Why do you like sad, depressing films so much?"

The same can be said for my taste in literature - dystopian science fiction, cyerpunk, hard boiled novels, Thomas Harris. To be sure, I enjoy happy stories, but I admit, my taste is rather macabre, and not just from dabbling in dark and angst-ridden subject material.

I hope I can provide a good answer to you here, sweetheart. ^_^

I've been thinking, as I've been re-reading 1984, why I enjoy these kinds of tales so much. I suppose it's because I feel that they have a tremendous value to society. They are precautionary tales; warnings. The reason I like reading about and watching dreary visions of a depressing future is because I suppose I think that if we can imagine it, and see how terrible it is, we can perhaps avoid it.

At the same time, I also am found of fiction that sheds a positive light on the future: Star Trek, Asimov, etc.

I guess I like seeing both sides of the coin, but I feel that humanity needs constant warning - I think the world would be a better place (maybe just a little, but I think it would be, if one can measure this sort of thing) if everyone in the world were to read 1984.

Maybe I'm just a dreamer.

*shrug*

=)

We started off this year with a few strong movies (Narnia, Geisha, etc) stretching into it. We have the possibility of a few stinkers in the immediate future, but I am actually very hopeful about what this year holds.

Two primary reasons are:

Silent Hill

and

Clerks 2.

Neither is sure to be an intellectual blockbuster, but I was worried about the SH film, and the trailer actually looks pretty good (despite mixing chronology and changing characters from the entire series - I am actually happy to see Pyramid Head, even though he does not appear in SH1). Clerks 2, well; I've been waiting a loooong, looooooong time for this.

Here's hoping.

- A

Brilliant! You are a Wizard!
Wizards are spells-casters who study powerful arcane magic. While Wizards tend to be pretty fragile, some of those spells can pack quite a punch. Unlike Clerics, Wizards aren’t as good at fixing people as they are at breaking them, so watch where you toss that fireball…
Your most distinctive trait is your intelligence.
A-ha! Just got out of my World Civ. midterm. I didn't study, partly because I haven't had much time, but mostly because I'm a fool. =0

However, it was O.K., since one of the short answer questions was Siddhartha Gautama, and of the three choices for an essay, one of the topics was Buddhism.

Sweet. ;)

Hence why I got out of class early and why I'm not depressed, but rather uplifted at the moment.

Oh, and I finished my science term paper on tropospheric O3 right on time.

r0x0r.

Oh yeah, that reminds me; I was an a gas station the other day, and they asked if I'd like to donate a dollar to "Jerry's Kids". Well, you know me, I can't say no to something like that, so I said "sure". The lady seemed happy enough and gave me a little thing to write my name on, and there was another blank field on it. I asked what it was for, and she replied that I could write anything I wanted to on it.

I thought about it for a moment, and then wrote, in large, block letters:

"r0x0r!!1!"

[/weirdness]

Later.

- AB

Much respect for Harvey Danger...

    <lj:music>Harvey Danger</lj:music>

Wow, this is cool...

Harvey Danger, best known for their annoyingly catchy hit "Flagpole Sitta" some years ago, are back, and this time their are giving the finger to the RIAA.

The band has decided to make their new album, "Little by Little", available online - in its entirity, in high quality.

They were never one of my favourite bands; it occurs to me that I never purchased their first album and had all but forgotten about them, save for occasionally recalling their hit.

Whether or not they will remain one hit wonders shall be seen, but in the meantime, any band with any kind of fame making their album available free online is automatically in my coolbook. I had to give the album a listen, just to honour this bold move.

Granted, it's possible that no label would take them, so they went to indie music stores and the web to get it out there. It doesn't really matter why they did it, to me; the point is that they did it.

Anyway, I really dig the album. I was pleasantly surprised. I guess I didn't expect something free to be so good (we have this idea that monetary price = value, and it's not always the case)...

The opening song, "Wine, Women, and Song" is a light, bouncy little affair that sounds like Elvis Costello singing a Frank Sinatra melody over Cake's rhythm section. The chorus kicks it a little more minor (which I dig)... I like it.

The second track, "Cream and Bastards Rise" is a great, pouncy post-punk pop track. Like Iggy Pop meets the Foo Fighters. The lyrics are great and spiteful ("...someone has to win, and you know what that means; it means someone's got to lose. It's probably you."), and the track actually rocks pretty hard.

"Moral Centralia", the albums third song, is perhaps my favourite. The introduction is dark, somber, and features some wonder piano and vocals that you can just hear the pain in. The lyrics are intensely personal: " 'You are weak, I am strong, and I've done nothing but lead you on.' she said..." - those last two words completely change the way you interpret the lyrical line... really great.

The opening three tracks are my favourites thus far, although "What You Live By" and "Diminishing Returns" (great lyrics; "I will meet you at the point of diminishing returns." - how many pop rock bands use economic expressions as metaphors for bad relationships?) have their moments.

Anyway, just interesting, I think. Definately worth a lesson. I'd give the album a 3.5 out of 5 if I had to pay $12 for it (I might actually buy it, just to show my support for the effort, and because it is a decent album), but overall a 4, since it was offered for free by the band.

Rock.

- A

<lj:music>So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish (Lounge) - H2G2 OST</lj:music>

A round of applause for Andre Agassi for putting up a hell of a fight at the US Open. He fought terrically, especially in the 2nd set (which Agassi won) and the war of a third set (which ended 7-6 in Federer's favour after Federer got out of his funk in the tie-breaker). My hat goes off to Federer, who is, without a doubt, at the top of a dazzling career. I think Agassi, who is 11 years the man's elder (35 to Federer's 24) proved his point. Great match (the best since the Olympics mens singles final, I daresay).

Er, not like I watch much tennis. :)

Seriously.

Watching the match made me want to start playing again, though.
